After Ottawa talks, solid progress toward plastics treaty

This conference was held last Monday in Ottawa, Canada and this treaty is likely to be signed in the year 2025.

It is worth noting that the use of plastic started in the 1950s and since then till now around 9 billion 20 crore tons of plastic has been produced across the world, out of which around 7 billion tons of plastic has been thrown away as garbage.

Currently, around 430 million tonnes of plastic waste is generated every year and this figure is expected to triple by the year 2060.

More than 2,500 representatives from 170 countries attended this meeting, which was held on Monday in Ottawa, the capital of Canada.

The meeting discussed new global rules regarding the production, use, disposal and recycling of plastics.

Progress and halts

Delegates discussed a draft of the proposed treaty, focusing on carbon emissions, production, waste management, and finance.

A legal drafting group will be formed at the next round of talks, to be held in Busan, South Korea.

The draft text will be reviewed in November (2024) and the treaty is expected to be ready for signatures by mid-2025.

“It has taken an ambitious 18 months and four sessions to reach this milestone, and we are now firmly on the road to Busan,” said Jyoti Mathur-Philip, Executive Secretary of the Treaty Negotiating Committee Secretariat.

“Adjustments and commitments are strong at this advanced stage of negotiations,” he said.

Jyoti Mathur-Philip stressed that this process is vital to “save future generations from the scourge and curse of plastic pollution”.
