Alleged Torture Of Woman At Odisha Police Station: Retired Army Chief Gen VK Singh and former CBI director M Nageswara Rao are at loggerheads over the alleged torture and sexual assault of an Army officer’s fiancée at a police station in Odisha.
General VK Singh, in a post on social media, described the treatment meted out to the fiancée of an army officer as “shameful and appalling” regarding the incident that took place in Bhubaneswar on the night of 15 September 2024. General Singh condemned the handling of the situation by the Odisha Police and demanded immediate action against the officers involved.
What did General VK Singh say
General Singh wrote in his post, “Everyone should listen to the daughter of a retired army officer. What happened to her at Bharatpur police station in Odisha is shameful. The Chief Minister of Odisha should take immediate action against those who protect policemen and criminals in uniform.”
M. Nageshwar came out in protest
At the same time, while responding to this post of VK Singh, former CBI director and Odisha cadre IPS officer M. Nageswara Rao expressed his disagreement. Rao accused the army officer and his fiancée of being drunk and behaving inappropriately. He wrote, “An army officer and his fiancée drove in the city late at night after drinking alcohol. They were involved in a fight with engineering students and later created a ruckus at the Bharatpur police station. When they were asked to undergo medical examination and blood test, they refused, which is a normal part of the investigation.”
Former CBI chief defends the police
M. Nageswara Rao defended the police, saying the Odisha Police, which manages more than 600 police stations, had no reason to misbehave with visitors, including army personnel. Rao urged Gen Singh to reconsider his stance, saying it was unfair to criticise the police for the actions of a single army officer.
Made this request to VK Singh
Rao further wrote, “It is not proper on the part of the former Army Chief and Union Minister to jump to conclusions and criticise the police for the alleged drunken misbehaviour of the Army officer and his fiancée. However, I will not question the discipline of the Indian Army based on the actions of one person. I urge the Army to take appropriate action against this officer for the inappropriate conduct of a soldier.”
