The state government has sent a copy of the petition and the High Court order to the Central Government. The court had sought information about the action taken on the petitioner’s complaint sent to the Centre.
The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) was asked by the court to provide the action taken by the Centre. Petitioner Vignesh Shishir had demanded the Center to investigate the complaint of Rahul’s dual citizenship. Now the Centre’s reply is awaited.
What has the petitioner said?
In the PIL, the petitioner has claimed that he has conducted a detailed investigation on the issue of Rahul Gandhi being a British citizen and has received many new information. The petitioner argued that he has many documents and some e-mails of the British government which prove that Rahul Gandhi is a British citizen. In such a situation, he is Ayodhya to contest elections in India. He cannot hold the post of member of Lok Sabha. The petitioner has demanded a CBI inquiry into the allegations of Gandhi’s British citizenship. He termed Rahul Gandhi’s dual citizenship as a crime under the Indian Justice Code and Passport Act and demanded registration of a case. The petitioner said that he has complained twice to the competent authority in this regard but no action was taken, after which he has filed a petition in the court.
Subramaniam Swamy has also raised this issue
BJP leader and former Union Minister Subramanian Swamy has also raised the issue of Rahul’s citizenship several times. Subramanian Swamy first raised this question by writing a letter to PM Narendra Modi in November 2015. Swamy had claimed in his letter that Rahul is a British citizen, hence his Indian citizenship and membership of Parliament should be cancelled. Swamy reached the Supreme Court regarding this matter. There he demanded a CBI investigation, but the court rejected this application.
Mahesh Giri also raised the issue in Lok Sabha in 2016
In January 2016, BJP MP from East Delhi Mahesh Giri had written a letter to the Lok Sabha Speaker demanding clarification on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship status. The matter reached the committee and it was investigated. After this Rahul Gandhi had to answer. In his reply to the committee, Rahul Gandhi had said that this is just an attempt to tarnish my image. I have never sought nor held British citizenship.

Dr. Subramaniam Swamy had raised this issue once in September 2017. Then Swamy not only tweeted about this, but he also wrote a letter to the then Home Minister Rajnath Singh and demanded action.
