The beginning of becoming Shankaracharya started with Adi Shankaracharya, one of the greatest representatives of Hindutva. Adi Shankaracharya established four monasteries in four regions of India to establish Sanatan Dharma.
Four monasteries in India – Govardhan Math (Puri) in eastern Odisha, Sharda Math (Dwarika) in western Gujarat, Jyotirmath (Badrikaashram) in northern Uttarakhand and Shringeri Math in South Rameshwar.
Math means such institutions where its gurus provide education, sermons etc. to their disciples. Apart from this, work related to social service, literature etc. is also done here.
