Kallakurichi Hooch Tragedy: Recently, about 65 people died after consuming poisonous liquor in Kallakurichi, Tamil Nadu. After this tragedy, there was an uproar in the entire state. The state government had ordered to give Rs 10 lakh as compensation to all the victims.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Madras High Court to cancel the order of giving Rs 10 lakh as compensation to the victims. This PIL has been filed by Mohammad Gaus.
The hearing was adjourned for two weeks
During the hearing on the petition, the division bench of Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammad Shafiq orally said that the amount of compensation is too high. They adjourned the hearing of this case for two weeks.
The petition filed in the court said that the victims were not freedom fighters or social workers who lost their lives for the public or society. They had done illegal work after consuming spurious liquor.
‘Mercy should not be shown’
The petition filed on behalf of Mohammad Gaus said, ‘Drinking illicit liquor is illegal. The state government should not show mercy to those who have consumed illicit liquor and done illegal work.’ The petition further said that only the victims of the accident should get compensation. It should not be given to those who have done any illegal work for their pleasure. The petition said that the order to give compensation to all the victims of the liquor tragedy is unfair and arbitrary.
