Risk of Talcum Powder : A case has come to light of starch and talcum powder being found in the medicines distributed in government hospitals of Nagpur. These fake medicines were made in a lab in Haridwar. These were supplied not only in Maharashtra but also in many states including UP, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh. This has been revealed in the 1,200 page charge sheet filed in the fake medicine supply case.
Let us tell you that in December 2023, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Maharashtra had seized about 21,600 ciprofloxacin tablets from the medicine store under the responsibility of Nagpur Civil Surgeon in Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMCH). Talcum powder has been in the news before

What is talcum powder and how is it made
Talcum powder is made from talc, which is a mineral. It is made up of oxygen, magnesium, silicon and hydrogen. It is used in making cosmetics and personal care. It has the property of absorbing moisture. Asbestos is also extracted from the same place where talc is extracted. Asbestos is called mica. It is a type of silicate mineral, whose crystal structure is quite different.
How dangerous is talcum powder?
This can damage the cells of the body. Research has found that its use increases the risk of ovarian cancer. It is believed that there is a high possibility of asbestos in talc during mining. Talcum powder causes respiratory diseases in children. The American Academy of Pediatrics claims that talcum powder can cause pneumonia in a child if it enters the body through breathing, so it should be used either sparingly or not at all.
