Katha – 1
According to a legend, Maa Durga killed a demon named Mahishasura during Navratri and freed the deities from their sufferings.

Mahishasura had attained unique powers by worshiping Lord Shiva and all the three gods namely Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesh were unable to defeat him. All the deities were terrified by the terror of the demon Mahishasura.

At that time, all the gods combined their powers and incarnated Durga. Mother Durga, born from the brilliance of many powers, removed everyone’s suffering by killing Mahishasura.

Katha – 2
A Brahmin lived in a city. He was the supreme devotee of Maa Bhagwati Durga. He had a daughter. Brahmin used to worship Durga and perform Yagya daily according to the rules.

Sumati means the daughter of a Brahmin also used to participate in this puja daily. One day Bhagwati could not attend the puja as Sumati was busy playing.

Seeing this her father got angry and in anger his father said that he would marry her to a poor and leper.

The daughter felt very sad after hearing the father’s words, and she happily accepted the words said by the father in anger. Even after trying many times, the writing of fate does not change.

According to his words, his father got his daughter married to a leper. Sumati got married with her husband and left. Due to the absence of her husband’s house, she had to spend the night in the forest on a grass seat in great distress.

Seeing this poor girl’s condition, Mata Bhagwati appeared with the effect of the good deeds done by her in her previous birth and said to Sumati, ‘O girl, I am pleased with you’, I want to give you something, whatever you ask for.

On this Sumati asked him that on what are you happy about me? Hearing these words of the girl, the goddess started saying – I am pleased with the effect of your virtue on you in your previous birth, you were a wife of Bhil in your previous birth.

One day both of you were caught by the soldiers and imprisoned in the jail because of theft by your husband Bhil. They didn’t even give food to you and your husband. In this way, during the days of Navratri, you neither ate nor drank water, so you got the fruits of Navratri fasting for nine days.

O Brahmin, today I am giving you the desired boon, pleased with the effect of the fast that was observed unknowingly in those days. The girl said that if you are happy with me, please remove my husband’s leprosy. The mother quickly fulfilled this wish of the girl. Her husband’s body became diseaseless by the grace of Mother Bhagwati.

According to an incident in Ramayana, Lord Shri Ram, Lakshmana, Hanuman and all the monkey army had attacked Lanka on Dashami Tithi by worshiping Mother Shakti for nine days from Aschin Shukla Pratipada to Navami.
